Mr. Lonnie Penney, Jr.

Obituary Lonnie LeRoy Penney, Jr. was born on June 5, 1961, in Wichita, Kansas. Lonnie was the only child born to Verna Jean Gilkey-Penney and Lonnie LeRoy Penney, Sr., who both preceded him in death. Lonnie was affectionately known to his family as “Bug” due to his curious personality. Lonnie was called home by God on Tuesday, December 28, 2021. Lonnie was dedicated back to Christ at an early age at First Church of Gid in Christ in Wichita, Kansas. As a child, Lonnie attended church with his mother and other relatives often. Lonnie grew up in Wichita, Kansas in his younger years with his parents, Lonnie and his mother later relocated to Kansas City, Kanas where he attended and graduated from F. L. Schlagle High School in 1980. Lonnie attended the University of Kansas and majored in Civil Engineering. As previously stated, Lonnie was very inquisitive as a child and always had a mindset of leadership. Lonnie redirected the course of his education and enrolled at Plumber’s Local 8 Plumbing School. He developed a long career as a Plumber working for Local 8 Plumbing for 15 years. Lonnie worked in many different areas on his career path, working for Ford Assembly Plant Claycomo, Missouri, Kansas Gas Service, Kansas City, Missouri School District and United Government of Wyandotte County. Lonnie possessed strong entrepreneurship qualities and always desired to own his own business to create generational wealth and a legacy for his family. Lonnie accomplished this goal by owning Plumbing and Drain Inc. for over 20 years. Lonnie met his wonderful wife, LaVetta Penney, in 1994 and married on May 6, 1995. They remained married for 26 years until God called him home. From this union, they raised six beautiful children. Lonnie had a huge heart and his love language was acts of service. Lonnie and LaVetta were foster parents to over 100 kids in the Kansas Foster Care System. Lonnie loved his family and friends; he will be greatly missed for his loving, caring and good spirit. Lonnie was a member of Evangelistic Center Church under the leadership of Bishop Jack Vaughn in Kansas City, Kansas. He previously attended New Covenant Church under Bishop Terry Glenn. Lonnie was also active in ministry at Living Waters Ministry under the leadership of Pastor Kim Young. Lonnie leaves to cherish his memories, his beloved wife, LaVetta Penney; four sons, Ryan Edwards, Lonnie Penney, III, Jeremiah Penney and Grey Penney; two daughters, PaNhia Penney and Kalia Penney; six beautiful grandchildren; two special aunts, Evelyn L. Penney and Arnetta Crawford (John); one uncle, Roosevelt Dixon; a special father and mother-in-law, David and Patricia Young; one brother-in-law, David Young, Jr. (Pastor Kim); one nephew, David Young, III and a host of other wonderful relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 7, 2022, 11:00am at Forest Grove Missionary Baptist Church, KCK. Interment Highland Park Cem, KCK. Visitation will be from 9am-11am at the church.
