Rev. Leslie L. Sims, Sr.

Leslie L. Sims, Sr. was born on April 30, 1936, in Gillett, Arkansas to Arthur “Buddy” Sims and Mattie C. Pickett. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Moranda and Mary Jane Pickett, siblings Bertha Smith, Alex Price, Randle Price, Raymond Price, and Dr. Pearl Chandler and three sons, Leslie L. Sims Jr., Dwayne Sims, and Derrick G. Sims. He was educated in the Kansas City School District and attended R.T. Coles and Manual High School and later attended Western Bible Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. Pastor Sims was baptized at an early age at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and later ordained by the late Rev. Preston Allen, Sr. Over the years, he faithfully served the church in many capacities, including Deacon, Choir Member, Adult Sunday School Teacher, Baptist Training Union (BTU) Director, Senior Outreach, Luncheon Ministry, Transportation Ministry, the Usher Board, and as a Spiritual Leader under the leadership of the late Pastor Preston Allen, Jr. He was known for his consistent presence at meetings and for offering guidance, wisdom, and support to others. Following the retirement of Pastor Allen, Jr., Pastor Sims was appointed by the church to serve as Interim Pastor until Pastor John L. Brooks was elected as Pastor. Pastor Sims was committed to his spiritual growth and regularly attended seminars so that he could continue to grow in his faith and share knowledge with others for their spiritual development. He had a deep love for music and looked forward to singing his favorite songs. among his favorites were “My Mothers, Amazing Grace”. Outside of church, he was an avid and enthusiastic bowler who truly enjoyed the competition. He also loved traveling and had a special love for eating chicken. Pastor Sims freely entered into his heavenly rest on Sunday, April 19, 2026. He leaves to cherish his memories: his beloved wife of 67 years, Deloris Sims; his daughter, State Representative Donna Barnes (Honorable Jerome), four siblings, Doris, Delano (Jacque), Maxine, Michael (Donna); grandchildren, Kalia Morehead (Vincent), Donesha Barnes, Jerome Barnes II, D’Angela Johnson (Marcus), Jeremi Barnes (Madison) and Dia Sims, eight great-grandchildren, bonus daughter, Karen McKinley, goddaughter, Ebony Nolden, uncle Rosco Pickett, along with a host of extended family, church family, and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church 1700 East Linwood Blvd., KCMO 64109. Interment: Mount Moriah Cemetery.
