Ms. Leona Hamilton

Leona Frances Glover Hamilton was born May 4, 1930 to the union of Willard Theodore Glover and Margaret ‘Maggie” Brown Glover in Boydsville, Missouri. One of ten children, Leona was the eighth child and the youngest girl born between her seven brothers. Her interaction with her brothers earned her the nickname of Gabby. Leona attended school in Boydsville under the teaching of her oldest sister, Miss Allene, as she was affectionately called by her students. Although an excellent student, it was necessary for Leona to discontinue school in the 10th grade in order to help on the family farm. In 1951, thanks to her uncle, Horace Brown, Leona had the opportunity to attend the Madame C.J. Walker Beauty College in Kansas City, Missouri and was able to start her career as a Beautician. Later, she went to work at Research Medical Center in the housekeeping department from 1968 to her retirement in 1992. She was a supervisor at the time of her retirement. Leona then worked part time at Catholic Charities as a home aide to elderly and disabled individuals, retiring from that position in 2003. At an early age, Leona gave her life to Christ and joined the Paris Fork United Methodist Church. Upon her relocation to Kansas City, she joined the church her Uncle Horace attended, Paseo Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. D.A. Holmes. She was a faithful member of Paseo Baptist for 72 years. Her service at Paseo included singing in the Cathedral Choir; a member of the Mary Bostic Missionary Circle; and regular attendance at Sunday School even to the present. Her pride and joy, however, was serving as the cook for over 50 years for the Bereavement Meal Committee. Her skill in cooking even reached around the community with many being delighted to receive fudge candy from her at Christmas time. Leona learned to bowl from her husband and with their love for Bowling both never knew they would pass this sport onto their youngest child. She bowled with her best friends for over 20 years. She won several awards and accolades for her ability to show sportsmanship when winning or losing. Leona bowled until she was well into her eighties. The bowling community will miss Leona. Leona married Julius Hamilton on June 21, 1951, and to this union 3 daughters were born, Sharon, Patricia and Crystal. Leona had a hand in caring for Julius’s sister, Teresa Hamilton McGee. Seemingly, Leona passed on one of her loves to each daughter – love of learning and education to Sharon, love of cooking to Patricia and the love of bowling to Crystal. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Julius; her mother and father, Willard and Maggie Glover; her sisters, Allene Logan and Maureen Smith; brothers Theodore Nelson Glover, James Glover, Russell Glover, John Wilber Glover, Willard Glover and Roger Wendell Glover. Leona is survived by daughters, Sharon Gladney (George), Patricia Noel (James), and Crystal Hamilton; brother Horace Donald Glover seven sister in laws, Terese Hamilton McGee, Brenda Glover, Inez Hamilton, Eleanor Hamilton, Ella Hamilton, Jackie Hamilton and Fannie Hamilton. Grandsons Brian Hamilton, Eric Moore, Geron Gladney; great grandson Jalen Gladney; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins and friends. Leona was known by many as Grandma she will also be missed by Dana and Pete Ford. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024, 12pm at Paseo Baptist Church. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10am-12pm at the church. Services conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons. Condolence may be shared on our website.
