Mr. Larry G. Barnes

Obituary Larry Gene Barnes aka “Sugar Bear”, 70, passed away on March 31, 2022, at his home in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on March 1st, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri to John and Brooksie Canady Barnes. Larry grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. Larry graduated from Lincoln Senior High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1970. After high school, he attended Penn Valley Community College and obtained his Associate's Degree in Education in May 1974. He furthered his education at Lincoln University and received a bachelor's degree in Education with a Minor in Criminal Justice and Corrections in May 1977. Larry began his career working for the railroad and in 1984 he was named the Activities Coordinator at Youthnet. Larry spent 8 years working as a manager at JP Todd in Kansas City, MO. He worked at the Full Employment Council for 13 years. Larry worked at Lawerence A Jones as a Funeral Attendant. He was a devoted Christian and joined Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church in May 1999. He was ordained as a deacon in August 2000. He was very intelligent, talented and the life of any party. Larry was a joy to be around and one of the funniest people you would have ever met. He had a smile that would light up any room. He loved spending time with his family, playing sports and having a good time. Larry was united in marriage to his first wife, Sacra Jo Martin in the spring of 1975 and had one child, Casie Nicole Barnes. Larry was united in marriage to his second wife Roslyn Smith on September 4, 1982, in Kansas City, Missouri, and had one child Ashley Bianca Barnes. Larry was united in marriage to his third wife, Dedra Masterson on March 18, 1999, in Kansas City, Missouri, and ended in January 2022. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Brooksie and John Barnes and his sister Jessie Braswell. Larry is survived by his daughters Casie Nicole Barnes of Kansas City, Missouri, and Ashley Barnes of Kansas City, Missouri; his sisters Angeline Berry of Kansas City, Missouri; Christella Shepherd of Kansas City, Missouri; his brother Donald Barnes of Miami, Florida; his grandchildren Devin Stovall and Deon Clark. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022, 2:30pm at the Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment XII Gates Memorial Gardens.
