Mr. Lafayette Burns

Obituary Lafayette Burns, 78, transitioned on March 3, 2022 at Research Medical Center. He was born on August 11, 1943 to Robert and Mollie Burnett Burns in Hooks, Texas. Lafayette was preceded in death by both parents, four sisters, Merdia Burns, Tennie Lee Burns, Lydia Burns, Donna Ray Burns, one brother, Vergie Lee Burns, the last three sisters and brother all died in infancy. Lafayette received his education from Hooks Colored High School in Hooks, Texas. He was Salutatorian of his graduation class. Lafayette attended Cedar Spring Baptist Church in Hooks, Texas before coming to Kansas City. Lafayette was an employee of the United State Postal Service for two years before he was drafted into the United States Army where he served for two years. He received an honorable discharge as a Vietnam Veteran. When Layette returned to Kansas City from the service, he went back to work for the United Postal Service. He joined the Army National Guard later. He spent twenty years in the National Guard before retiring on October 14, 1995. He retired from the Postal Service January 3, 2003 after forty-one plus years. Lafayette attended Penn Valley Junior College for two years while working as a Postal worker. He received his degree. Lafayette was an avid bowler. He bowled in and won many tournaments in Kansas City, Missouri and other states. He bowled until his health began to fail. Lafayette was married twice. One daughter, Dawn LaNette Burns, was born to the first marriage. One son, Antoine J. Burns, was born to the second marriage. He had another daughter, Kimerly Rooks. Lafayette leaves to cherish his memory the love of his life over thirty plus years, Frances Elaine Henderson; one son, Antoine J. Burns (Heather) of Quincy, Illinois; two daughters, Dawn LaNette Burns of Kansas City, Kansas and Kimerly Rooks of Kansas City, Missouri; three sisters, Elina M. Mercer of Kansas City, Kansas, Rena M. Gaines (Donald) of Kansas City, Missouri, Wanda Johnson of Forney, Texas; one uncle, Robert Burnett (Betty) of Forney, Texas; one aunt-in-law, Mary L. Burnett of Kansas City, Missouri; a special niece, Arlevia Mercer of Kansas City, Kansas; twenty-one grandchildren; great grandchildren; others in his life the children and grandchildren and great grandchildren of Frances Elaine Henderson; a host of cousins and many friends. Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 18, 2022,10:00am at the Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery, LVNKS. Visitation will be from 9am-10am at the chapel.
