Obituary Mrs. Josephine Lee – Affectionately known as “Jo” – born September 15, 1934 in Cotton Plant, Arkansas to the union of the late McCoy and Joe Ella (Fitzpatrick) Mathis. She was the eleventh child. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined New Hope Baptist Church in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Baptized in the Bayou River in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Josephine transitioned from this earthly home early Monday morning June 1, 2020. Jo graduated from Vocational High School in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Jo was united in holy matrimony to William Lee in 1951 and moved to Kansas City, Kansas. There were five children born to this union, Dorothy Ann Lee, William Lee, Jr., Thomas Anthony, Cordell Lee and Sandra Kaye Lee. William and Jo were married sixty-seven years. Jo joined GMZ Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Albert Colbeo; Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Joseph Fletcher. Jo worked for Hallmark Cards retiring after thirty years of service. Later on, she worked part time as a Bus Monitor with Durham School Services and First Student Transportation. After there, she retired for the last time. Jo loved to travel by car, train, airplane and of course she loved cruising on the Creasey ship boat to islands. Loved being with her family and friends. She loved to dress and wear her lovely hats. Could cook the best meals and oh those pies, cookies and cakes from scratch. Jo’s soft voice, sweet spirit and quiet presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her. Jo was preceded in death by her parents McCoy and Joe Ella Mathis, Charlie, Marie Warren, Viola, Penola twin sisters, Rose Ella Lewis, Louise Simmons, McThomas, Roosevelt Mathis, Lonnie Mathis and Eileen Williams. Jo leaves to cherish her life all five of her children, Dorothy A Lee Reliford (Calvin), William Lee, Jr. (Deborah), Thomas Anthony Lee, Cordell Lee and Sandra Kaye Lee (Lonzo); ten grandchildren; fifty great grandchildren.
