Johnny Chambers

Obituary Johnny Chambers was born January 11, 1948, in Waldo, Arkansas to Travis and Minnie Chambers. Johnny was the sixth child born into this union. Johnny departed this life on March 15, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, T.J. Chambers, Lonnie Chambers and Ronnie Witcher. Johnny gave his life to Christ at an early age and expressed his faith at Roswell Church of Christ. Johnny attended elementary school at Mt. Pine Arkansas where he developed an interest in Math and Science. He graduated from Langston High School in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1966, where he received numerous student of distinction awards. Johnny was an excellent baseball player in high school which led him to be recruited by the Chicago White Sox in his senior year; however, he chose to go to college to pursue a degree in Math. Johnny attended college at the University of Pine Bluff Arkansas (former Arkansas AM&N College). He was initiated into the Tau Sigma Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity on December 11, 1968. Johnny had four-line brothers: Ray Jarrett, Glenn Freeman, George E. O’Neal and Walter P. Weston. “The Rolling Five” was their line name. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Pine Bluff Arkansas (formerly Arkansas AM&N College) in 1970. He received his Teacher Certification in Mathematics from the state of Arkansas Department of Education on July 14, 1970. He later obtained his Master’s Degree from Emporia State University in 1987. Johnny married Terese Chambers (Spears) in 2013. He had four children from his union with his former wife, Louise Chambers (Walker); Melissa, Sharon, Teresa, and Johnny Jr. Johnny taught Math in the Kansas City Kansas School District-USD 500 (Northeast Junior High School, Coronado Middle School and F.L Schlagle High School). During his time as an Educator he would give his students words of wisdom and encouragement. His most common saying you would hear him tell his students was "Think Positive!”. He would also make learning fun and enjoyable by cracking a joke or two in his classroom. He was a seventh-grade basketball Coach for Coronado Junior High School. While at F. L Schlagle High School he was very involved in after school tutoring, the Math Club, Teachers of Tomorrow and MACESA. He was also chosen as "Who's Who" Among America's Teachers, because he was so generous and passionate about his work. His philosophy was that no student should be left behind and that regardless of his/her circumstances that everyone deserves to be successful in a unique way. In 2002, he was hired as an Adjunct Instructor at the Kansas City Kansas Community College, and later was promoted in 2009 as a full-time Resource Center Developmental Math Facilitator (RCDMF). His responsibilities as a Math Facilitator included administering placement tests, preparing students for the math Work Keys Certificate, and assisting with CASA and Accuplacer testing. Due to his outstanding performance during 2012-2013, on July 10, 2013, he was recommended for a MERIT, by the Board of Trustees and College Administration. He later retired in 2014. Johnny loved watching Western movies. One of his favorites was The Lone Ranger. He also collected miniature vintage classic cars; some of his favorites were his 1965 Ford Mustang Hardtop and his 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. He was a huge fan of Muhammad Ali and also loved Langston Hughes’ poetry. If you were to ask him what his favorite TV show was, you might hear him simply say “CNN”. Johnny Chambers leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Terese Chambers; his children: Melissa Williams (Curtis), Sharon Williams (Ricardo), Teresa Chambers, and Johnny Chambers, Jr.; three stepchildren: Tonya Spears, Terri Greene (Dione), and Terron Spears. He was also blessed with nine grandchildren: Kevin Graham, Jr., Charmane Block, Brandon Wesley, Tevin Spears, Darius Vaughn, Jalen Vaughn, Myla Johnson, Destiny Greene and Danielle Greene; one great-grandchild, Alayah Watson; his siblings: Paul Chambers (Bertha), of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Ruthie Neal of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Roy Chambers of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Ruby Stephens of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Ozell Chambers of Little Rock, Arkansas, Minnie Jackson (Sonny of Saginaw, Michigan, Bobby Witcher (Teresa) of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Carolyn McNeil (Keith) of Montgomery, Alabama, and Rita Bolden (Jerry) of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Service for Johnny Chambers will be held Saturday, March 24, 11:00 a.m. at Forest Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1417 N. 9th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Church. Interment, Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
