Obituary To Everything There Is A Season… A Time to be born… John William Fletcher Sr. was born on August 12, 1930 to Alberta Flowers Fletcher and Houston Stapleton in Brandon, Mississippi. His parents, his beloved wife of sixty-six years (Carrie), six brothers (Vardaman, Thomas, Eddie, William, Silas, J. Houston), four sisters (Emma, Chestine, Dora, Carrie), two sons (James, John) and one granddaughter (Adriane) preceded him in death. A Time to live… John grew up in Oak Grove, Louisiana where he was educated. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. On November 13, 1950, he was united in marriage to Carrie Blackmon; To this union was born seven children. Life wasn’t easy working as a Sharecropper; he wanted a better life for himself and his family. His sister encouraged him to move to Kansas City, so in 1955 he packed his belongings and his family and moved to the city. John had an aptitude for technical and mechanical things. After moving to Kansas City, he got job as an auto mechanic at Skelly’s Gas station at 4047 Troost. He was as a mechanic for 10 years until he was hired at American Bakeries as a Maintenance engineer. He retired from the Bakery after working there 25 years. John was a member of the Providence Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years. He was a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, Trustee, Choir member and whatever else was needed in the church. He loved his church. Every Saturday he attended Bible Fellowship where frequently he was asked to speak. He loved this “Christian Walk” and he lived it! He loved singing – not a day passed where he wouldn’t be singing, whistling or humming. He was a Jack of all trades-he could fix anything (it might not be up to code, but it would work). He was a man’s man. He loved to share his wisdom and knowledge of the “Word”. The first question he would ask when meeting you is “Are you saved”? He wanted everyone to have life in Jesus Christ. A Time to die…John departed this life at his home on January 11, 2019. He leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Anthony Fletcher (Rhonda) of Kansas City, Missouri; four daughters, Virginia Reed, Shawnee, Kansas, Linda Greer (Eddie), Jerrie Fletcher, Yevonne Sawyer (Darrell) of Kansas City Missouri; two daughters-in-law, Valarie Fletcher (John), Diane Fletcher (James) of Kansas City Missouri; two sisters Janet Banks (George) of Jackson Mississippi, Betty Spann, Brandon, Mississippi; three brothers, Lynn Stapleton (Lillian), Tommy Stapleton (Ora), Jackson Mississippi, Willie Stapleton (Doris), Clinton Mississippi; eight Grandchildren; four Great Grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
