Helen Elizabeth Hayes

Obituary Helen was the eldest daughter of David and Uzella Blake Caldwell. She was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she graduated from Plato Price High School. She made the decision to live for the Lord at the age of 12 years old and was baptized in the Primitive Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. Later, in her twenties, the family moved their membership to the Wilson Heights Church of God, under the leadership of the late Rev. Columbus Crawford, in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1945, she was married to the late John Washington. To this union, a son, John Louis Washington, was born. In 1955, Helen and her son, John moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and became members of the 23rd & Woodland Church of God, under the leadership of Pastor Odis Walker. The church later made two moves, first to 36TH and Wabash Ave. (Wabash Ave. Church of God) and then to 10801 Ruskin Way (Bethel Family Worship Center). She was a single mother, raising her son, John Louis, for 17 years, while working at Mahoney Furniture (8 years). In 1962, Helen married the late Brother Charlie Hayes. They were married for 33 years until his passing on February 12, 1996. Through the years Helen has served the church in many different capacities; sang in the Young Adult and Adult choirs, was President of the Missionary Society (8 years), which changed its name to Women of the Church of God, she taught Sunday School and led a prayer group; She was Chair-woman of the Deacon and Deaconess for 22 years. And, in her senior years, God blessed Helen to serve as a Mother of the church until she was called home under the leadership of Rev. Dennis Lester, Jr. Helen is survived by her son and daughter (in-law), John Louis and Cynthia Faye Washington; three grandchildren, Vincent Washington, Russell (Faith) Washington, Margo(Ryan) Walker; six great-grand children, Shanice Washington, Shanae Washington, Imani Washington, Nia Washington and Ian Walker and Donte Penn; three great-great-grandchildren, Tristen Washington, Karter Washington and Christian Baptiste; Her brothers, Homer (Elaine) Caldwell, Orlando, FL. and Harry (Hattie) Caldwell, Houston, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Hayes, two sisters, Dr. Alberta Brown, Mary Powell; three brothers, David Caldwell Jr., Robert Caldwell and Louis Caldwell. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, September 26th at Bethel Family Worship Center 10801 Ruskin Way KCMO. Visitation 9am. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery.
