Helen Arva Gonzales

Obituary Helen Arva Gonzales was born April 19,1933 to the Union of George O. Gonzales and Mary Helen (Harwell) Gonzales. She is the 5th child of 9 siblings to this union. Eight siblings preceded her in death. They were Glenora Roland, June Eberra, Lillard Gonzales, Lillie Newton, George (Pap) Gonzales, Irma Keith, Marvin (Danny) Gonzales, Vernon (Tootie) Gonzales, Qwendolyn (Linda) Gonzales. Helen Arva was introduced to Christ at an early age and had the full understanding and knowledge of what being a Christian meant. She received Christ and was born again and accepted Christ as her Personal Savior. Helen Arva attended Ebeneezer AME for many years and then joined Covenant Memorial under the guidance of Pastor Darrle James. Helen Arva wore many hats. She was an entrepreneur for most of her career. She was a professional model for Lane Bryant, she was the owner of Helen’s School of Modeling & Etiquette in Chicago, IL., she was the owner of HAG Military Hats & Supplies for over 20 years. She held hat making classes until her health began to fail. She was a model with Sephia Models, she was a member of the 24kt Golf Club. Helen Arva was the personal secretary for the late Johnny Taylor and formed an enterprise known as TAG, INC. (Taylor & Gonzales) at the beginning of Mr. Taylor’s singing career. Helen Arva was a seamstress and designer for many. She traveled the world and experienced many cultures. She volunteered at the Trinity Lutheran Hospital. She gave graciously of herself. She was a prominent social woman in the Kansas City area. Helen Arva never met a stranger and was always willing to help. She left a mark on everything she touched because God lived within her. Helen Arva was married to Lewis E. Hurt, Sr. of that Union were 8 children. She dedicated her life raising her children; Loure Robinson, Roy Gonzales (Cheryl), Gregory Gonzales, June Jordan (Gary), Lewisa Denise Thomas (Frederick Douglas), Chandra Hughes (Honorable Leonard S. Hughes, III), Lewis Hurtt, Jr. (Martha), Cedric Hurtt (Stacey). She had an in-depth influence in all her children’s lives. Helen Arva left a legacy of Wisdom that her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren will be able to draw from. Helen Arva leaves behind her grandchildren; great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She will be greatly missed and cherished forever.
