Ms. Helen Cann-Toney

Helen Frances Cann-Toney was born in Rosedale, Kansas on February 4, 1952, to the union of Matthew Cann Sr. and Albertine E. (Shelby) Cann. She was the fifth oldest out of twelve children. The Angels came and held Helen in their arms, they wrapped their wings around her to escort her to the gates of Heaven to be delivered to the Lord. Helen passed peacefully on February 1, 2024, in the comfort of her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, Emmett and Helen Shelby, one sister Janice Cann. Two nephews Leonard (Estell) Cann, Paul (Harris) Cann and one niece D’Shawna Cann. Helen attended Holy Name Catholic School in Kanas City, Kansas. She later moved to Kansas City, MO and attended Westport High School class of 1970. Helen attended Penn Valley Community College and studied business. Helen retired from the Kansas City Public Library after twenty-five years of service and from the United States Postal Service. Helen was a dedicated Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan. During her pastime, she loved doing yard work and caring for her plants. She loved decorating for the holidays, especially putting up lights on Christmas. Overall, Helen was a natural Care Giver to many. In 1971, Helen married Aaron Toney and to that union one son, Aaron Levell Cann was born. They later divorced. Helen leaves to cherish her memory, one son Aaron Cann (Rochandra Lee), Fiancé Jose Rentrei. Five Brothers: Matthew (Marie) Cann Jr., Leonard (Jackie) Cann, Steven Cann Sr. of Kansas City, MO. Mark (Janice) Cann Sr. of Raytown, MO, Dwayne (Verna) Cann of San Antonio, TX. Five sisters: Reba Burgress, Artice Cann, Yvonne Cann, Patricia (Clarence) Cann- Williams, and Sarita Cann all of Kansas City, MO. A host of nieces and nephews. Bonus sister Veta Walker. Four Aunts: Beverly (Howard) Johnson, Lida (Booker) Carter, Marlean Shelby, Donna Shelby. One Uncle: Oscar (Glendora) Shelby. Special cousin Glenda “Punch” Tuggle. Special Friends and Family: Avern “Grandma” Hughes, Carlton Fowler, Marshall (Oliva) Morehead, Phyllis Val’Rey and a host of family and friends. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 17, 2024, 10:00am at the Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00am-10:00am at the chapel.
