Mr. Grant S. Hopkins

Grant Sheffield Hopkins, “aka” (Groovy Grant) departed this life on January 2, 2024, at home with family and loved ones. Born to Thomas and Mary Hopkins on February 9th, 1945, in Rosedale, Kansas. He attended the Kansas City Kansas school district and graduated from Sumner High School. He was married to Velva Griffie and later married Phyllis Hopkins. Grant had many hats he wore from Greyhound Bus Company, KC school district, KKFI Radio, Bluesfest, and even his own photography company “Just Out Productions”. He was affectionately called Groovy Grant and well known not only locally, but internationally. He was the original founder of “Music in the Park” on 31st Benton Blvd., known as the Leon Jordan Park. He brought his mobile turntable and plenty of records. Neighbors from far and wide would come together to listen to music, laugh and step the night away to some Spirit-filled Old School, R&B, Blues and Jazz. Unknowing to him, he broke down many racial barriers. Groovy knew how to bring people together despite their ethnicity or age. At a young age he attended the St Paul AME Zion Church, under the leadership of Rev. Banks, Rosedale, Ks. Later moving his membership to the Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ, Kansas City, MO under the leadership of Bishop James Tindall Sr. where he served on the Broadcast Ministry and the Men's Department until his death. Groovy Grant leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters, Melinda-Hopkins-Hill of Raytown, MO, Tonya Griffie (Frank) of Chicago, Il, one stepdaughter, Mi'Chelle (Al) Allen, Kansas City, MO, one son, Grant Griffie of Tuscan, Az. three stepsons Vandester(Brenda) Brown, Kansas City, Mo, Johnnie Brown, Kansas City, Mo, Keith Griffie, El Paso, Tx. He had 32 Grandchildren, 45 Great-grandchildren and 11 Great-great grandchildren. One sister Deborah Allen, Rosedale, KS. One brother, Thomas (Pat) Hopkins Jr, Vienna, Va. One uncle, Harold Sheffield (Frankie) Topeka, KS. His close friends, JoAnne Savage, Bobbie Rush, Monta Tindall and Walter McCrary. Groovy will be truly missed by a host of relatives and friends. Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2024, 4:00pm at Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ. Private Disposition. Services conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons.
