Geraldine Sutherlin

Obituary Geraldine Sutherlin was born January 19, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri to McKinnley James and Ruth Murray. Geraldine transitioned from this life on the morning of February 23, 2018. She was preceded in death by both parents, McKinnley and Ruth, her twin brother George, brothers, Cecil and Sylvester, and her sisters, Dorothy and Cleopatrice. Geraldine was married to Charles L. Sutherlin, Sr. on June 10, 1956, and to their union, four children were born: Valerice R. Sutherlin-Bates, Charles L. Sutherlin, Jr., Aaron T. Sutherlin, Sr., and Brian D. Sutherlin, Sr. The marriage was dissolved in August 1990. Geraldine was reared on the west side of Kansas City where she attended Douglas Elementary School. She graduated from R.T. Coles/ Lincoln High School where she was a Majorette and a member of the Cheerleader’s squad. She worked and retired from Betty Rose Coat Factory. Later she went on to work for H.R. Williams Mill Supply for the next twenty years and retired. She was a member of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of Reverend Raymond Handy. Geraldine was affectionately known by those who knew her well as, "Gerry" and "Granny". Geraldine was very outgoing, kind, caring and a witty individual who was loved and respected by all Geraldine Sutherlin is survived by her children: Valerice R. Sutherlin-Bates of Kansas City, Missouri, Charles Sutherlin, Jr. (Jenny Hicks) of Kansas City Missouri, Aaron Sutherlin, Sr. (Shalonda Triblett), of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Brian Sutherlin, Sr. (Anna Iannelli) of Atlanta, Georgia; two brothers, Melvin James of Detroit, Michigan and Rene James of Detroit Michigan; one sister, Patricia Davis of Rock Island, Illinois; a special granddaughter, LaToya Wright (Larry Wright); eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral Service for Geraldine Sutherlin will be held Friday, March 2, 11:00 a.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 1700 E. Linwood Blvd. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Church. Interment, Park Lawn Cemetery.
