MR. GARY FINNELL

Obituary Gary Michael Finnell was the youngest son born to Rev. Lorenzo R. Finnell and Gladys E. Jackson Finnell on October 17, 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was raised and educated in Kansas City, Mo. School System, where he graduated from Southeast High School in 1974. Gary then graduated from The Penn Valley Nursing program in KCMO and became a Registered Nurse and Critical Care RN at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Leavenworth, KS and then later transferred to the VA hospital in KC, MO. where he worked tirelessly for a total of 30 years. Gary loved photography and was an excellent photographer who covered weddings, individual portraits, and family gatherings. He loved to bowl and won numerous awards and trophies. He also loved to cook and was a great cook of professional chef's quality. He shared his gift of cooking and barbecuing with the church, family gatherings, and with friends. Gary liked music and he could be found listening to gospel, R & B, and Santana. Gary was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and liked to watch the games with his brothers. He liked to drive on most trips and was a quick traveler, he didn't waste time to get from point A to point B. Most importantly Gary was a Christian, he was raised in a loving Christian home and gave his life to Christ at a very early age. Gary served and gave his time and energy in serving the Lord, and being a faithful Deacon at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. He served as an usher, Men's Laymen's ministry, participated in men's day seminars, local, district and state activities and conferences. He also sang in the Men's choir. Gary exhibited his faith by his works. He met the love of his life Barbara, and Gary and Barbara enjoyed 33 years of marriage. They served together at Morning Star until relocating to Summerville, South Carolina, a warmer climate. While in South Carolina, Gary and Barbara joined Royal Missionary Baptist Church, where they served and attended faithfully. Gary departed this life on November 15, 2020 crossing over from time to eternity. Preceding him in death was his dad, Rev. Lorenzo R. Finnell. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Barbara Vaughn Finnell, daughters LaTisha and Amy Vaughn, grandchildren Tahra, Cydney, and Diantae, mother Gladys E. Finnell, brothers Rev. Benjamin R. Finnell (Rose Marie) Papillion Nebraska, Rev. David L. Finnell (Mary) Ankeny Iowa, special cousins Hon. Thomas Newton (Renee), Camilla Stanton (Dr. Danny), and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and church family. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, November 28th at Morning Star Baptist Church of Jesus Christ 2411 E. 27th Street KCMO 64127. Visitation 9am.
