Ms. Freida Moss

Ms. Freida Moss, passed away on March 5, 2025, at her home. Born in Kansas City, Missouri on June 16, 1930, the only daughter born to of the union of Genoa Adell Brown and Samuel Cecil Vaughn, Jr. She had two brothers Raymond Cecil Vaughn and Roy Turner Vaughn. Her parents, brothers, eldest daughter, Marcia Liddell, and grandson, Clarence Moss, preceded her in death. She married Clifton Moss in 1951, to this union 3 children were born. This union ended in divorce. Ms. Moss was baptized as an infant at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, Kansas City Missouri and was one of the longest serving members. She loved her home church and had a big heart for the A.M.E. Zion Church as a whole. She was very active and held numerous leadership positions in several departments including Christian Education Department (CED), Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society (WH&OMS), and the Sunday School just to name a few. Most notably she served several years as Local Sunday School Adult Superintendent; Conference Director of Christian Education of the Missouri Annual Conference; Mission Educator for the WH&OMS and she also served as an officer of the Connectional Ministers and Lay Association of the A.M.E. Zion Church. She loved the hymns of the church and had a vast knowledge of them; she often knew all the words to even the most obscure hymns by heart. As a young adult she joined the O.D. Carson Metronairies Choir and later served as the 2nd president in their history. She later joined the Adult Mass Choir and Kansas City District Choir (AME Zion Church) In 1961, she began serving as church secretary under Dr. Oscar Davis Carson until his passing in 1975. She had a second tenure as church secretary at Metropolitan beginning in 1993, serving nearly another 30 years. She served three pastors during those years: Bishop Kenneth Monroe, Rev. William E. Kelly, and Rev. Michaell L Murray, retiring in 2020. One of her life’s greatest honors was being consecrated a deaconess, under Pastor Murray’s leadership in 2007. She remained a faithful member of Metropolitan until her death. Ms. Moss was educated formally in the public schools of Kansas City and graduated from the Lincoln High School in 1947, and Lincoln Junior College in 1949. She served as secretary to Carl Roman Johnson who was the first African American Judge of Municipal Court of Kansas City, an accomplishment of which she was most proud. She retired in 1986 from the Social Security Administration after 30 years of committed public service. Ms. Moss loved to travel, having taken countless domestic trips, especially in support of the church and its various national meetings. She also took multiple international trips including South Africa, the Holy Land, Egypt, and Greece. She loved to read, do word searches, watch Wheel of Fortune, and spend time enjoying her family. She was beloved for her impeccable baking skills, especially her 7up pound cakes and her infamous chocolate chip cookies. She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Clifton E. Moss Jr. (Johnnie Mae); and Charles K. Moss (Verlinda); one daughter, Caron D. Williams; eight grandchildren, Loücst Butler (Resean); Lori McDaniel (Timothy); Akin L. Moss (Angela); Kalem Williamson (Ashley); and Chase Moss; four granddaughters: Kellye Richardson (Royal); Rev. Arionne Lynch (Christopher); and Janae Moss; 20 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; and loved ones. She also leaves behind special additional daughters: Rev. Flaxine Smith; Alexandria Johnson; and Rachelle Smith; and lifelong friends, Naydeen Redmond; and Arnold Ralph Brown. Funeral Services will be held on Friday March 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Metropolitan AME Zion Church 2828 Prospect Ave. KCMO 64128. Interment: Forest Hill Cemetery.
