Ms. Evelyn Louise Sutton

Obituary Evelyn Louise Sutton was born on April 20, 1924 to Pearl McNeal and Eugene Rhodes in Perkins, OK. She was the youngest of 6 children. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, William McNeal, Maurice McNeal, Van McNeal, Ossie McNeal, and Ida Mae Ramey. Evelyn joyfully welcomed her only child, a daughter whom she named Norma Lee. Norma was her pride and joy. She was a wonderful and devoted mother who always did everything she could to ensure her daughter never wanted for anything. Evelyn would often say "I did OK with that one child" , as she was surrounded by all of her grands and great grands. She later moved to Cushing, Oklahoma where she attended school. Evelyn then followed the footsteps of her big sister Ida and moved to Wichita, KS. This is where she met and married the love of her life, Avery H. Sutton. They enjoyed a beautiful life together serving their church and community, raising their daughter and spoiling their granddaughters. Evelyn & Avery were married for 58 years until his death in 2006. She united with The Church of the Living God Temple #36 under the pastorate of Overseer R.P. Spicer. She diligently served in numerous capacities in the church for many years. Although, she was dedicated to and involved in many ministries, her passion was for the Women’s Work Department. She faithfully hosted a weekly community Bible study sessions in her home. It was a highlight of her week! Evelyn served as teacher, president of the local board, eventually became president of the 7th District Women’s Work, and was named President Emeritus by Bishop E.A. Morgan. Evelyn accepted the call to ministry and began preaching and teaching God’s word locally as well as on the district and national levels. Education and self-improvement were also very important to her. This is evidenced by the fact that she enrolled in classes, studied hard, & received her GED while in her 50s. Evelyn loved and served God daily. She taught her family to love and serve God. And she taught the women of the church to love and serve God. She leaned and depended on Him for everything and could often be heard singing her favorite hymn, " Guide Me Oh Thou Great Jehovah,. as a testimony and prayer. Evelyn leaves to cherish lasting memories her daughter, Norma Smith, son-in-law, Vernon Smith, 4 granddaughters, Patrice Smith, Diana Burns (Arthur), Evelyn Morgan (Kenneth), and Nicole McDonald (Corey). She also leaves precious memories with 10 great grandchildren (Raheem, Rahmaan, Rashawna, Rahisha, Brittany, Melissa, Kendra, Christopher, Jael, and Elyse), 10 great great grandchildren, and 2 great great great grandchildren. Her brothers blessed her with a host of nieces and nephews who also cherished and loved her dearly. She also had many special friends and “adopted” children. “And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. (Revelation 7:14-17) She departed this life on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at University Health Care Center Lakewood. Funeral services will be Friday, February 24, 11:00am at Church of the Living God 2725 N. Hillside, Wichita, Kansas. Interment Old Mission Cemetery.
