Ernest Collins

Obituary Ernest James Collins entered this life on March 5, 1929 as the son of Melvin Collins and Magnolia Gertrude Richards Collins. He was the youngest of three children, Hayward and Yvonne. All have preceded him in death. Ernest was a life-long resident of Kansas City, Missouri and attended Bruce Elementary, Lincoln High, and R.T Coles vocational school. He enlisted into the United States Army division after completing high school. After having received an Honorable Discharge, he returned to R.T. Coles to pursue additional trade school and later attended Penn Valley College to further his education. On Nov. 20, 1950, Ernest married Marjorie LaVerne Jones. From this union, five wonderful children were born: Carmen Diane, Darryl Broderick, Mialan Gaile, Phyllisa Jenise, and Stephanie Elizabeth. Ernest was a very hard worker. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, Sears Roebuck & Company, and Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T), where he retired in 1993. As an entrepreneur, Ernest started his own business, E&J Heating & Cooling Company. He had a very sharp mind and always challenged himself and his children to expand their minds and to do greater, especially in the area of stock investments. He was a man of integrity and believed in “paying your bills.” Ernest James Collins leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 67 years, Marjorie Collins; five children: Diane (Jim), Roddy (Nedra), Gaile (Azel), Lisa (Keith), and Stephanie; 10 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one niece, Yvonne Carter; 2 nephews Ricky and Carlos Collins; four sisters-in-law: Audrey Wallace, Gertrude Jones, Marion Woodfork, and Marva Jones; two special friends, Dixie Jones and, Shonda Hines. Ernest made his transition from this life at 7:05 p.m. on August 20, 2018. He was a loving father and devoted husband. He acknowledged the Lord as his personal Savior during the last few years of his life. We will miss our father, grandfather, and husband. ‘Go in peace, Dear Heart. You will be missed, but never forgotten. We will lovingly cherish your memory.’ Funeral Service for Ernest James Collins will be held Saturday, August 25, 11:00 a.m. at New Life in Christ, 12401 Byars Road, Grandview, Missouri. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Church.
