Mr. Elvis E. "Sonny" Gibson

Elvis Edward (Sonny) Gibson was a native of Kansas City Missouri, born to Louis Gibson and Eddie Mae Gibson on July 15,1937 in Calvert Texas. He attended Wendell Phillips Middle and RT Coles high school. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force March of 1955 and was Honorably discharged in December 1958. After returning from the Air Force, Sonny attended Park University where here he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Social Work and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Sonny married Sylvia M Gibson, to this union was born Patricia E Robinson. Sonny went on to work for the Post Office and later retired in 1989 as Branch Chief of Fair Housing with The U.S. Department of Housing. A social engineer consultant with a comprehensive work record in the areas of community human relations, conflict resolution and human resource management. Specialized skills include 29 years of Government experience as an equal opportunity expert with experience focusing on administrating planning, and consulting for Government, community organizations and private businesses. His civic involvement was as follows , Chairman of the Charlie Parker Foundation, President of Kansas City Black United Fund, Vice President of KCMO Black Historical & Genealogy Society, National Board Directors for National Black United Fund of New York, Board of Governors for Bruce R Watkins Cultural & Heritage Center, Quasi-Judicial Office for KCMO Interpersonal Conflict, Resident Scholar at Black Archives of Mid America Inc, Community Advisory Board of Directors Channel 19 T.V., United Minority Media Associations, National Civil Rights Association, National Association Study of Negro Life & History, Board of Directors Linwood & Paseo Y.M.C.A, Board of Directors Dr. Martin Luther King Hospital, Kansas City Chapter Operation Push, Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Incorporated. Distinctive Honors were Jefferson Ward 1986, for outstanding public service and State of Missouri Dr. Martin Luther King, Distinguished Service Award 1987. Elvis Edward (Sonny) Gibson leaves to cherish his love and life: Daughter Patricia Robinson, Daughter Gabrielle Gibson, Grandson Brandon Gibson, Great Grand Daughter McKenzie Gibson, Great Grandson Braydon Gibson, Loving sister Sandra Gibson, Karen Gibson, and Mary Helen Gibson, Cousin Troluis Gibson (Daughter Gail Gibson) and a host of relatives, community, and friends. There is an old passage that says - No one should walk through time without leaving Key Evidence of their passing through it. Sonny, you left the evidence. Funeral Services will be held on Friday July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James United Methodist Church 5540 Wayne Ave. KCMO 64110. Interment: Leavenworth National Cemetery.
