Ms. Elizabeth A. Matthews

Obituary Elizabeth A. Matthews was born July 23, 1942 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Charles Bell, Jr. and Katherine Bell. She was preceded in death by both parents and her brother, Charles Edward Bell, Sr. Liz began her teaching career during the middle sixties in Southeast, Missouri. She began as a Special Education Classroom Teacher in Kansas City, Missouri District September 6, 1965; later moved to position of Special Education Coordinator, supporting and supervising teachers of The Mentally Retarded, Gifted and Talented and Home Bound. She retired from the Kansas City School District in 1995. She became an Adjunct Professor for Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri where she supervised Student Teachers. Liz was a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. which she joined at Grambling University in 1960. She became a member of Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. after relocating to Kansas City where she served on many committees and in various capacities, including Debutante Ball Chairman and President of the Chapter. Liz attended Southern University Laboratory School where she graduated. She also attended Grambling State University and graduated. Liz was a member of Mount Zion First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana under the leadership of Reverend Dr. T. J. Jamison. She joined Second Baptist in 1964 or 1965 under the leadership of Reverend E. E. Chappelle. She was involved with the Sunday School class, Bible Study class, Choir, VBS and worked on the Finance Committee as counter. She joined Swope Parkway United Christian Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Rodney E. Williams in Kansas City, Missouri in Spring 2011 and served on the Family Life Ministry with enthusiasm and zeal. Liz leaves to cherish her memories: two nephews, Charles Edward Bell, Jr. and Fredric Marquis Bell; three great nephews, Charles Edward Bell, III, Marcus Daniel Bell and Tyson Marquis Bell; other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2022, 11:00am at the Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment XII Gates Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 10am-11am at the chapel.
