Obituary Elizabeth Ross (Ward) Coleman of Kansas City, Missouri was born November 11, 1932, to the union of Reverend Ross Nathaniel Ward and Laura Viola (Parker) Ward. Following a battle with cancer, Elizabeth was called to heaven to join her parents and sisters at 6:20 am on March 26, 2022. Elizabeth is survived by a loving community of family, relatives, and friends. She leaves to mourn two Edward Coleman (Angela) of Overland Park, KS, and Merle Coleman of Kansas City, MO; two daughters: Sheila Ward of Highland, CA, and Paulette Powell of St. Peters, MO. She was the adored grandmother of Donna Hoskins, Carla Brooks, Dewayne Zollar (Lakeisha), Latonya Ward, Lloyd Ward, Keith Ward, Shelisha Ward, Lemuel Coleman (Loran), Ke’Andra Swopes (Nason), Cicely Enyard (Gordan), Rachel Whitfield (Mark), Clark Powell II, Brianne Ward, Nkyla Coleman; 25 great-grandchildren, 32 great-great-grandchildren, one great-great-great grandchild and beloved dog Carson. She was preceded in death by her parents: Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Ross Ward; her husband, Paul Coleman Sr.; her sisters: Joyce Marie Bass, Ruth Reed, Sylvia Rogers, Martha Hopkins, Barbara Lou Johns, and Eunice Green; her daughter Janice Ward; her stepson Paul Coleman Jr; her son-in-law Dr. Clark Powell Sr.; her grandson-in-law Andre’ Hoskins; and her great-grandson, Trevion Preston Powell. Elizabeth was employed as a medical transcriptionist for the Kansas City Missouri Veterans Hospital for 30 years. Upon retirement, she found joy working as a school bus monitor for special needs children, and later volunteered to help the severely handicapped at a center until she could no longer work. She was a faithful member of Centennial United Methodist Church where she enjoyed Sunday sermons and gospel songs. She was a strong believer in faith and prayer. Elizabeth was an active member of her community, involved in her neighborhood association 23rd St. Pac, the neighborhood watch program. She was an avid volunteer and had a passion for reading, and educating herself. She loved to tend to her garden, watch daytime talk shows, watch the evening news, read the morning newspaper and was always ready (at the drop of a hat) to spend time with her family. She valued all accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Elizabeth was known for her sweet laughter, warm heart, and nurturing ways. One of her lifelong teachings was to always love family, be kind and educate yourself. This is in line with one of her favorite sayings, “Doing right never goes out of style.” Elizabeth Coleman’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Centennial United Methodist Church, 1834 Woodland Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64108. Visitation at 9 am, Funeral Services at 11:00 am. Burial services in Forest Hill & Calvary Cemetery 6901 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64131.
