Obituary DORIS WHARTON Doris Fern Dysart Wharton was born December 9, 1914 in Omaha, Nebraska, to the union of Dr. Marion E. and Zola Dysart. She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Winifred O. Rogers, husband Ivy D. Wharton and niece Venise Jones Poole. Doris grew up in Atchison, Kansas where she attended Lincoln Elementary School, graduated from Atchison High School and at an early age was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church. At age 19, she married Rudolph Barnett and to this union, a daughter Winifred, was born. Winifred was her pride and joy. In 1941, Doris moved to Kansas City, MO to attend Madam C.J. Walker Beauty School. After completing beauty school, she worked in beauty shops in Atchison, Omaha and Kansas City and was licensed in four states –Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, and Nebraska. Also, she taught beauty culture at Watson Beauty School in Omaha, Nebraska. Lifelong education was very important to Doris so she continued to pursue her education at Mt. St. Scholastica College (now Benedictine College), Atchison, KS; University of Missouri (UMKC), and Avila College, KCMO. In addition to her long career as a beautician, she taught at Lincoln Elementary School in Atchison and later worked at Pratt and Whitney, the Internal Revenue Service, Doctor’s Clinic, General Hospital #2, St Joseph Hospital, City Hall and the Board of Education all located in Kansas City. During her years at the Board of Education, she was a school secretary and Kindergarten teacher. While working at General Hospital #2, she met and married Ivy D. Wharton, a police officer, and later detective, for the Kansas City Police Department. The couple was married by Rev D. A. Holmes of Paseo Baptist Church, where Doris was a member. In 1963, Doris and her husband joined Second Baptist Church and became members of the Inspirational Choir. Doris served as chairperson of the Annual Homecoming Celebrations on four different occasions; taught Sunday school; served as president of the Fellowship Boosters, Willing Workers and Relief Workers Clubs; and was a member of the Ninety-Plus Wise Ones. Although she resided in a Nursing Home in her later years, she continued to serve as a member and prayer partner in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry and faithfully called members to pray with them. Also, she was a member and president of the Les Modernes Study Club of Greater Kansas City. Doris loved to travel. Her daughter Winifred was employed with Trans World Airlines (TWA), and this provided the opportunity for Doris to travel to Europe (where she saw the Pope), Belize, Central America and Canada. She also took cruises in the Caribbean, the Aegean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, as well. At her 100th birthday celebration, Doris was acknowledged with these words in a letter from Rev. Dr. Kendall D. Jones, Sr., "In the garden of life, God allows certain flowers to reach the century mark. He allows that flower to exist to show evidence of His creative beauty. God knows and chooses that flower to bring about his loving presence in the lives of all that surrounds it. Sister Wharton, you are such a flower. Your beautiful smile, personality and character show forth the very beauty of God. Your wonderful fragrance of who you are brightens the lives of those you touch and those who are blessed by you." Doris departed this life January 30, 2020 in Kansas City, MO. She leaves to cherish her memory, a sister Dolores Dysart Booker, Kirkland WA; grandchildren Faith Rogers Sanders, Alexandria, LA; Hope Rogers McFall, Aurora, CO; Joy Rogers Perry and Gaye Rogers Thornton, Kansas City, MO; Jesse James Rogers, III (Yolanda), Wichita KS; Leslyn Jones-Pettit (Gilbert), Seattle, WA, and a host of great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces; special cousins Izetta Downing, Chicago, IL and Tharen Burton, Clovis, CA and their families. Special close friends, who frequently visited her at Swope Ridge Geriatric Center, are Regina Taylor (Otis), Kenneth Goodwin, Rosetta and Tosha Barkley, Betty Harrell, Michael Shook, Rev. Robert Earl Easley, members of the Second Baptist Church, KCMO and Nursing Home Outreach Ministry. of the Ninety-Plus Wise Ones.
