Ms. Doris J. Cotton

Doris Jean Cotton, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great- grandmother, aunt, and friend was born on June 4, 1940, in Galloway, Arkansas to parents Carl Hannah and Bertha Lee Doyle. Her mother passed away when she was 2 years old. Her grandparents, Lucious and Callie Doyle, raised her and her brothers in her parents’ absence. Doris attended Valley Grove Elementary School in North Little Rock, Arkansas. She relocated to Kansas City, MO in 1955, and married Leroy Cotton in June of 1974, who preceded her in death. Her professional career in childcare began in 1976. She devoted her life to caring for children up until 2019. Doris was a member of the Eastern Stars, and for 3 years she held the position of Treasurer and Secretary. Doris was a faithful member of Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church until her transition. She was active in Women #2 Sunday School Class and served on the Senior Usher Board for over 30 years. She got great joy working in the soup kitchen feeding those less fortunate. Doris gave a tenacious fight during her sickness and never once let up! No matter what she had going on, you could always find her checking in on others and seeing how she could help. Most times her help was in the form of prayer. You could always catch her at 5:00 A.M. every morning standing in the gap for family and friends calling out their names in prayer one by one. She was truly a Praying Mother/Grandmother. Her captivating smile and sassy personality illuminated any space she entered. Doris was a prayer warrior, motivator, counselor, mentor, and friend. Her inspiring spirit, fierce personality, zest for life, and steadfast determination will be remembered by the lives she touched. Doris is proceeded in death by her grandparents, Lucious and Callie Doyle; her parents, Carl Hannah; and Bertha Lee Doyle; her brothers, J.C. Garrett; and Truman (T.J.) Garrett; her sons, Ronald Hannah I; and Dion Hannah; her granddaughter, Roniesha Hannah-Gates; and her great- great granddaughter, Jaryiah Hannah. Doris leaves to cherish her legacy her children, Phyllis Hannah; Sharon Hardiman of Houston TX; and Theresa (Steve) McIntosh. Her grandchildren, Tasheia; Lolita; Sharita; Nieshia; Johnathan; Ronald II; LaKresha “Toni” (Harold); Sidney; and Ron’Trell; great-grandkids, I’Jeanae; D’Eric; Dea’veon; Iyonna; Antonija; Alexis; MiKyla; Ashlynn; Ashton; Tyson; Kameron; Iris; Kaiden; Kaliese; Novalee; and Onyx; great-great-grandkids, DeOnna; Zayla; and Khai; along with a host of cousins; nieces; nephews; and friends. On Thursday, September 12, 2024, Doris Jean Hannah-Cotton transitioned from earth to eternity. “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4: 6-8 Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, 11:00 A.M. at Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church 3935 Prospect KCMO 64130.
