Mr. Desmond G. Mayhew, Sr.

Desmond Gustave Mayhew was born February 24, 1965 to Wilford and Saundra Mayhew, he was the youngest of three children. Although he came into the world as Desmond, to most he was simply known as Desi. He spent most of his life in Kansas City, MO, where he grew from a free spirted young boy to a well rounded man. Religion was always instilled in him at an early age as he attend Mount Transfiguration Church. He attended Paseo Academy, where he graduated from in 1983 before seeking higher learning through vocational schools Sears & Roebuck for auto mechanics. The skills he learned here aided him in working at Skelly’s, the family owned gas/ service station. In addition to being an auto mechanic, he also had a passion for food. It was this passion that helped drive him to open up Harlin’s, his own restaurant in the historic district of 18th and vine. In addition to his restaurant, he also enjoyed a long career working for the Missouri Gas Energy and Kansas City Water departments over the years. The next milestone in his life came on March 24, 1997 when he was wedded Jayneice Newsome. He had a talent for making friends easily and making all friends who he met feel like his best friend. Nobody was ever a stranger him. Desi loved to sing, 2 step, watch movies, and travel. He enjoyed playing pool, video games, and grilling. He relished hanging out with his friends, going to the casino, fishing, riding motorcycles, and cooking. He was truly a jack of of all trades and the master of none. This was the unique skillset that aided him in his world of entrepreneurship. He was self employed and self driven in lawn care, flooring, auto mechanics, and selling vehicles. To know Desi, is to know that he was a strong willed and stubborn person at times, but also clever and full of knowledge gained through his life experiences. He was a risk taker, some would even say daredevil at times. He was a private, funny, fearless, and independent man. Above all, he was a man of God and a member of the United Believer Church. His death was abrupt, but peaceful. It has left family and friends profoundly saddened. He is proceeded in death by his father Wilford Mayhew, mother Saundra Mayhew, grandmother Laverne Smith, brother Kip Mayhew, and half sister Brenda Washington. He leaves behind to cherish his memories brother, Anthony “Tony” Mayhew, half sister Virginia “Jenny” Van and foster brother Robert Camara, Aunt Martina “Tina” Travis, estranged wife Jayneice Newsome, Four daughters: Ashley Mayhew, Amber Mayhew, Bria Mayhew and Brooke Mayhew, two sons Andre Mayhew and Desmond Gustave Mayhew Jr. (Dj). He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services Thursday, May 23, at 11:00am at Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment Forest Hill Cem.
