Deacon Sylvester Beene, Sr.

Obituary Deacon Sylvester Beene, Sr. was born in Hempstead County, Arkansas on July 6, 1921, to the union of Annie Mae (Bronson) and Tandy Beene. He was the third of nine children born to that union, River Lee, Lawrence, Georgia, Minnie Mae, Martha, O.C., Floyce and Helen. Sylvester departed this life on February 4, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters, a daughter, Patricia Flowers and a grandson, Kevin Beene. On June 23, 1942, Sylvester married the love of his life, Corrine Collins and to their union three children were born: Sylvester, Jr., Patricia, (deceased) and Lannie. Affectionately known as Uncle Jack, Sylvester accepted Christ at an early age at St. Stephen Baptist Church in Hope, Arkansas. He would later unite with Paradise Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of Trustees and a member of the Male Chorus for many years. He subsequently united with the congregation at Pilgrim’s rest Baptist Church where he served faithfully in various ministries including, Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent until his health prevented him from doing so. A Veteran of World War II, Sylvester was an outstanding serviceman who was Honorably Discharged from the United States Army. He would later serve many years as a dependable and dedicated employee of the United States Postal Service. The flag draping his casket is given by a grateful nation for his Meritorious Service to his country in a time of war. Deacon Sylvester Beene, Sr. leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of seventy-five years, Corrine; two sisters, Helen Williams and Floyce Woods; two sons, Sylvester (Ionia) Beene, Jr. and Lannie (Jeanette) Beene; five grandchildren: Kenneth Beene, Sheriece Moses, Terence (NaTasha) Beene, Alisia Beene, and Dominique Flowers; three great-grandchildren: Kaidan, Jada, and Gabrielle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral Service for Deacon Sylvester Beene, Sr. will be held Friday, February 9, 11:00 a.m. at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 3350 Hardesty Ave. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Church.
