Obituary On Monday, April 2, 2018, God called his Angel home, Mr. Curtis Edward Scott, Master Chief (also known as) Yankee or Butter Beans. Curtis, the fourth child was born on May 24, 1946, to the union of Robert Henry and Lula Mae Scott in Talladega, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Robert Henry and Ms. Lula Mae Scott; a son, Curtis Scott, Jr., a sister, Veronica Cain, and a brother, George Scott. The Scott family moved to Kansas City in 1950, where Curtis attended classes in the Kansas City Public School District and graduated from Central High School, Class of 1965. After graduation, Curtis worked one year before deciding to enlist in the US Coast Guard on May 13, 1966. This was the start of his illustrious thirty-year career. Curtis recruited Coast Guards from Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska and later joined the Presidential Honor Guard. The experience gave him the opportunity to become the first minority Recruit after the 1966 Inaugural Parade under the leadership of President Lyndon B. Johnson, at the White House in Washington, DC. His career path transitioned to a long-term commitment. Curtis would always say of his career, “I’ve talked with the President, traveled the world, been to all fifty states and met a lot of wonderful people”. Curtis received his Bachelor's Degree while serving his country. Curtis married his hometown sweetheart on February 14, 1970, the love of his life, Mrs. Shirley J. Scott and remained married forty-seven years. To that union three children were born, Curtis Scott, Jr. (preceded in death), Ms. Shauntay S. Scott and Ms. Ebony D. Scott. Curtis dedicated his life to his family, instilling values and structure and loved them to the moon and back no matter the circumstance. Curtis retired from the US Coast Guard, June 19, 1996, and began teaching for fifteen years at various Title 1 schools in Georgia through the “Troops to Teacher” program. This program allowed him to obtain his Master's Degree. Now that Curtis has his angel wings and has sailed away, he’s gone but never forgotten as a man of integrity, commitment, and honor. Scott of Hiram, Georgia; his daughters, Ms. Shauntay Scott of Sacramento, California and Ms. Ebony Scott of Hiram, Georgia; grandson, Giovanni, of Hiram, Georgia; sisters, Gloria Morgan (Andrew), Patricia Goggins (Lee), and Debaria Scott; brother, Robert Scott, Jr. (Pat) of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters-in-law: Kathy King (Reginald) of Sacramento, California, Delores Free of Mt. Washington, Maryland, and Jennifer C. Merritt-Williams (Mike) of Kansas City, Missouri; a brother-in-law, Webster Free, Jr (Charlotte) of Kansas City, Missouri; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family. Funeral Service for Mr. Edward Curtis Scott will be held Friday, April 13, 10:00 a.m. at Mount Calvary Church of God in Christ, 2422 Van Brunt Blvd. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at the Church.
