Ms. Cheryl Y. Thornton

Cheryl Y. Stuart Thornton was born October 20, 1969 to the union of Charles Williams Jr. and Bettie A. Stuart in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the last child of six siblings. She was proceeded in death by her father, Charles Williams Jr.; her mother, Bettie A. Stuart; her sister, Marilyn Stuart-Overall; her grandmother, Rev. Rosie St. Clair Payne; great nephew, Tyrone Lamont Stuart Jr., and great niece, Tierra Stuart. Cheryl was educated in the Kansas City, Missouri School District. She graduated from Westport High School. Cheryl worked several jobs throughout her lifetime. She was employed with the Internal Revenue Service for twenty one years until her health started to decline. Cheryl accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Kansas City, MO under the leadership of the late Rev. Emanuel Johnson. Cheryl later united with Grant Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Kansas City, KS under the leadership of the late Rev. Sylvia Anne Harris. Cheryl enjoyed praising God and serving in the field of missions. Cheryl was a faithful member of the Mattie B. Williams Women’s Missionary Society where she served as as the treasurer. She also served two quadrennials as local secretary until receiving her final reward. Cheryl took pride in serving as a youth advisor where she was responsible for overseeing and assembling gift bags during Easter and Christmas for the youth and adults. She also served on the Stewardess Board, Sunday School Department, Usher Board, Culinary Ministry and was a dedicated member of the Finance Committee. Cheryl served as Member At Large of the former Kansas/Nebraska Conference Women’s Missionary Society. She was a member of the Jamesina Evans Area Women’s Missionary Society. Cheryl served as a Communion Stewardess during the Midwest Annual Conference alongside her mother and sister. Cheryl was an active member of the Midwest Conference Women’s Missionary Society “WMS” and was willing to do whatever she was asked to do. Cheryl would also be found assisting ar the health station during Annual Conference and Vacation Bible School. Cheryl’s biggest desire was to someday oversee a food pantry for people in need. On February 23, 2025, Cheryl departed this life at the home with her sister, Renita Y. Blackburn at her side. Cheryl leaves to cherish her memory three brothers: Randall Stuart Jr., Rodney Stuart Sr. (Arletha), Michael Stuart Sr. (Rachel), and one sister: Renita Stuart-Blackburn; one aunt, Rev. Margaret Banks, one Uncle, Rev. Melvin Moody (Cynthia), and a bonus brother, Johnny McClenton I (Gail), and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, Graveside service will be on Friday, March 21, 2025, 11:30am at Brooking Cemetery. Visitation from 10am-11am at the chapel. Services conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Condolences may shared on our website.
