Ms. Carrie Hert

Obituary Carrie Mae (Guilkey) Hert was born on February 16, 1925 in Hope, Arkansas. She was the only girl of four children (Hezekiah, Fred and Calvin) raised by Olivea and Louis Guilkey. Carrie attended elementary and public middle school in Arkansas. Carrie met and married Luther Martin Hert, Sr. when the family moved to Plain Dealing, Louisiana. Luther and Carrie migrated north to Kansas City during World War II in 1943. To this union was born eight children – Luther Jr., Janet, Mary Helen, Barbara, Valerie, Kimberly, Kathleen (twins), and Patrick. The family settled in Kansas City, Kansas on what is fondly called the North End. Carrie and Luther became part of an enduring legacy of families and kinfolk who inhabited that part of town where the children were raised and disciplined by all parents on that block and where faith, honesty and hard work prevailed. Our beloved cousins, the Maddox family can attest to that. Life for the family was joyous and happy. Carrie was a grand cook, a sterling seamstress and a loving, precious mother. She worked periodically outside of the home to supplement her children’s education. Her husband, our Dad, worked at the packing house and for a period in Fairfax building airplanes during the war. Carrie would occasionally babysit and do domestic work to ensure that all her children received a good, solid education and wanted for nothing. Carrie joined Blessed Sacrament Church after the death of her husband Luther, in 1996 and remained a member there for the rest of her life. Although illness prevented her attendance over the last ten years, she continued to receive Communion and to communicate periodically with the Priests and parishioners at Blessed Sacrament. A prolific writer, Carrie would often create prose, write opinions and dissect the content of various passages in the Bible. She read her Bible often and would write about certain scriptures that were meaningful to her. Carrie was a devoted wife and mother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Martin Hert, Sr.; one son, Luther Martin Hert, Jr.; three brothers (Hezekiah, Fred and Calvin); her parents, Olivea and Louis; and 2 grandsons, Michael and Christopher. She leaves to cherish her indelible memory seven devoted children -Janet Olivea Milan (Robert L. Milan, Sr.) Kansas City, Kansas; Mary Holbert Las Vegas, Nevada; Barbara Burgin (Reginald Burgin) Kansas City, Kansas; Valerie Holmes Kansas City, Kansas; Kimberly and Kathleen Hert, Kansas City, Kansas; Patrick Hert, Kansas City, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren- Eric, Scottie, Anthony, Stephanie, Erica, Cynthia, Jeffrey, Kerri, Lauren, Shelly, Trina, Tammie, Adrian, Aaron, Carlton and Patrice; seventeen great grandchildren; seventeen great great grandchildren; our devoted cousins, the Maddox family; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Of special note, Carrie has one living half sister, Mrs. Helen Dickerson, of Los Angeles, California and one sister-in law, Mrs. Sarah Johnson of Longview, Texas. Carrie Mae Hert departed this earth on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at the age of 97 after a month’s long recovery past surgery. She was surrounded by family and friends who loved her dearly then, who love her supremely now, and will always cherish her memory. We love you Mother, forever more. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 2, 2022, 11:00am at Blessed Sacrament 2203 Parallel KCK. Interment Highland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9am-11am at the church.
