Mr. Calvin J. Jones

Calvin Jerome Jones began his life’s journey on November 11, 1967, in Decatur, AL. He was the youngest of three children born to the union of the late Willie Elree Jones and Emma Ruth (Shackelford) Jones on a street affectionately referred to as 12 th Ave. He quickly blended in with the rest of the 12 th Ave Crew, where the bonds of friendship remain intact until this day; withstanding time, space, and distance. He was taught the ways of the Lord and baptized as a youngster at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Town Creek, AL, under the pastorate of Rev. Jessie Little, where he served in the Youth Choir and Youth Usher ministries. Calvin was educated in the Decatur City School System and graduated from Austin High School, Class of 1986. He was known for his athletic prowess from an early age, and carried his passion for sports into adulthood, as an avid Alabama University Roll Tide and Dallas Cowboys fan. He also exhibited his love for sports by serving as a referee, umpire, and coach for recreational basketball and football programs throughout the Kansas City area. His laid-back, friendly, easy-going demeanor made him easy to talk to and a solid trustworthy friend and mentor. Calvin was a provider with a solid work ethic, having been employed at Wayne’s Farm (Decatur) and later at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO, retiring after 33 years of service. Beyond his contributions in the corporate sector, he also co-owned The Rhythm Lounge, a restaurant & live music venue, along with his wife and other partners. In August of 1990 while out with friends, Calvin noticed a tall statuesque chocolate drop by the name of Edwina Renee Fountain. They were both instantly smitten and after exchanging information, he called the very next day and stopped by for a visit. The spark was still there in the “light of day” and the conversation and connection were effortless. Their very first date took place on the Missouri River Queen, a well-known 600-passenger three-deck paddle-wheeler, popular for dinner and jazz cruises. Although they both realized that this was the start of something meaningful, neither could have known that five years later, on August 12, 1995, they would be joined in Holy Matrimony in this very building by the late Rev. Dr. Wallace S. Hartsfield, Sr., leading them on a path of love, togetherness, friendship, and devotion spanning more than 30 years. Not only was Calvin a phenomenal and loving husband, but he was also an amazing father, who poured into his sons; showing them his work ethic, supporting their sporting events, taking them along when he refereed games, and spending one-on-one time with them, all of which shaped the young men that they are today. On June 30, 2026, Calvin Jerome Jones was welcomed into Heaven by his parents and son, who transitioned from time into eternity before his birth. Also preceding him in death was his brother, Willie, Jr and twin nieces, Tiffany and Stephanie Jones. Left to carry his legacy and cherish wonderful memories are: wife, Edwina Renee Fountain-Jones; 2 sons, Antione Dione (Audreia) McCoy of Town Creek, AL, and Calvin Jerome Jones, Jr; sisters, Peggy (Jerry) Seay of Decatur, AL and Jamesetta Jones of Duluth, GA; sister-in-law, Crystal Fountain; brother-in-law, Ira Fountain; niece, Tamala Jones of Decatur, AL; nephews, Kemoine (Angela) Seay of Decatur, AL, Kyle (Starr) Woods of Duluth, GA, Kordell Woods of Tampa, FL; uncles, William (Helen) Shackelford of Chattanooga, TN, Bobby (Annie) Shackelford of Town Creek, AL, Willie B. (Ada) Jones of Muscle Shoals, AL; 3 grand-nieces, 1 grand-nephew; a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends as well as his beloved 12 th Ave life-long friends and crew. Funeral services Saturday, July 25, at 12:00pm at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation Saturday 10:00am-12:00pm at the church.
