Ms. Barbara Jean Rollins

Obituary Barbara Jean Rollins, age 89, passed away on 11, February 2023, at her home in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born on June 13, 1933, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Perry and Florence Ann Moore Calhoun. She was their only child and was truly loved and doted upon. Barbara grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. She graduated from Sumner High School having previously attended Douglas Elementary School and Northeast Junior High School. A devout and faithful Christian, Barbara was a member of St. Stephen Baptist Church for over 60 years. Definitely a servant of the Lord, she participated in many of the church's ministries throughout her years as a member. She was a member of Usher Board #1, Baptist Training Union #4, Rhoda Circle, M & G Sunday School, Church Women United, an alternate for St. Stephens and worked in the Extended Care Ministry. She faithfully attended church until her health would not allow it. Bretton's Restaurant was Barbara's first job. She worked there for several years until one day a guy from Hallmark Cards walked in, saw something special in her, and asked her to apply at Hallmark Cards. Barbara took his advice and applied for a job. She was hired and worked as a Research Analyst for 25 years, retiring from Hallmark Cards in 1997. On July 23, 1952, she married James Marion Rollins, Jr., the love of her life and soul mate. To this union, a daughter, Denise Michelle Rollins was born. Barbara and James were married for 70 years! Barbara loved her daughter, Denise, and was very protective of her. When Denise was a young girl, Barbara would love to put dresses on her to "dress her up." Denise hated it then and, to this day, she doesn't like to wear dresses. Shopping was one of the many things Barbara loved to do. She dressed herself with care purchasing hats, shoes and purses matching them with her many church suits and dresses. With her two best friends, Veda and Willa, Barbara would often go to fashion shows and out to dinner. She also loved going to "the boat", Harrah's Casino, where she was known to cash in on a few earnings. She was very serious about taking care of business even prewriting her obituary. She and husband, James, loved to dance and have a good time going to parties doing the "Jitterbug" and other dances. They also loved to go down to Big 11 Lake and just "fool around". They would grow up and grow old together truly committed to their wedding vows "to cherish and love, in sickness and in health, til death do us part". Barbara departed this earthly life on February 11, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves to mourn her spouse James, of Kansas City, MO; her daughter Denise Rollins of Kansas City, MO; step daughters, Jennifer Washington of Kansas City, KS and Cheryl Martin (Richard) of Lenexa, KS, their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives, neighbors and friends. Memorial service will be held Friday, February 24, 2023, 11:00am at Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Interment. Forest Hill Cemetery. Family hour 10:30am at the chapel.
