Ms. Armentha Young

Armentha Young was born on January 24, 1937 in Prairie, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Alvin and Scottie (Heard) Franks, and the first of nine children born to this union. Her parents, brothers (Joseph and Alvin, Jr.), sisters (Scottie and Mary), and daughter (Debra Hatch) preceded her in death. Armentha resided in Kansas City, Missouri for most of her life and was married to Walter Young, Sr. from 1958 to 1976. Armentha was educated in the public schools of Kansas City, Kansas, and received her high school diploma from Sumner Academy (formerly Sumner High School) in 1954. She briefly attended courses at Kansas City Kansas Community College before beginning her career working for the State of Missouri’s Department of Social Services in February of 1956, where she remained for over 36 years until her retirement in August of 1992. Armentha returned to work for the state’s Labor & Industrial Relations program from 1993 to 1999. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Bishop W. H. White for a number of years, and attended Sheffield Family Life Center on occasion until her health prevented continued attendance. Armentha was very family and community oriented. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, to whom she was affectionately known as “Gigi”, as well as her sisters and the rest of her extended family. Armentha was a social butterfly, known to many and loved by all. She enjoyed a variety of activities in her youth, such as participating in social clubs and taking modeling courses. She became a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 51, in which her son participated. Armentha was very active with both her class club (Sumner Class of 1954 Club) and her sorority (Zeta Amicae). She loved to travel, attend family events, care for her dog Ranger, and many other activities. Armentha departed this life on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at her home in Kansas City, Missouri. She leaves to cherish her memory her son Walter (Perneca) Young, Jr. of Blue Springs, Missouri; her daughter Venita Young of Overland Park, Kansas; her bonus son Willie “Calvin” (Irvina) Wilson of Taylor, Texas; her sisters Wilda Beamon of Katy, Texas; Sarah Weatherspoon of Overland Park, Kansas; Rita (Johnnie) Harris of Florissant, Missouri; and Cora (Alfred) Lyons of Kansas City, Missouri; her grandsons Edward (Rachel) Young of Liberty, Missouri and Andrew Young of Blue Springs, Missouri; her granddaughters Cali (Dion) Gee of Overland Park, Kansas; Ashlen (Hayden) Green of Blue Springs, Missouri; LaShawn Hatch, Sherril Hatch, Makeya Hatch, Paige Wilkinson, and Skylar Young of Kansas City, Missouri; her bonus granddaughter Lana Scroggins of Merriam, Kansas; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many other extended family members and friends. Armentha was an inspiration to everyone who knew her, and her legacy of love will continue to flourish within all of us. Funeral services Saturday, November 9, at 11:00am at Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment Mount Washington Cemetery. Visitation 10:00am-11:00am at the chapel. Arrangements entrusted to Lawrence A. Jones & Sons. Condolences may be shared on our website.
