Altisha M. Polk

Obituary Altisha Mae Polk (Tisha) as some fondly referred to her, was born May 8, 1926, in Muskogee, Oklahoma to the union of Alton Leeks and Clara Bell Jackson. Altisha departed this earthly life on Monday, February 19, 2018, at the Life Care Center of Grandview, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her father, Alton Leeks, Sr., her mother, Clara Jackson Leeks, step-father, Mack Cobb, a brother, Alton Leeks, Jr., and a step-sister, Nancy Cobb. Altisha married the love of her life, George J. Polk and remained married for fifty-five years until he passed. Of this union they were blessed with their daughter, Jane E. Fowler. Altisha graduated from Manuel Training High School where she was a Drum Majorette and the football Homecoming Queen. She attended Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma. She worked for St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, as a Registered Nurse, where she retired after twenty-two years of dedicated service. Altisha was baptize unto Christ in the 1950’s and remained a dedicated and faithful member until her loving father called her home. As the church relocated, she attended Worship at 14th & Michigan and 39th & Michigan. The majority of her spiritual Journey in the Lord was spent at Swope Parkway Church of Christ, Kansas City, Missouri. At Swope Parkway, she was a very active member of the Willing Workers, the Kitchen Crew, adult singing group and the Coordinator of many Southwestern Christian College Dinner Days, until her illness slowed her down. In the latter years, her spiritual journey was spent with the Greater Metropolitan Church of Christ, Kansas City, Missouri. She was known for her pound cakes and peach cobblers. She loved to sing and cook. She loved wearing hats. Altisha Mae Polk leaves to cherish her memory her only daughter, Jane E. Fowler; her best friend of sixty-one years, Mozelle Gilyard; her best friend of fifty- plus years, Birdie Wilbon; Goddaughters: Vickie Reed, Joanne Pope, Debbie Porchia, and Dorothy Chaney; Godson, Anthony Adams; cousins: Booker Leeks, Alberta Jackson, John Hudson, Marilyn Jackson, Charles Durant, Betty Jackson, Doris Maytubby, Elaine Hudson, Phyllis Porter and Francia Rollie; her extended family: Gerald and Gloria McGill, John and Helen Jones, George Pope, Cleathus and Zee Waddy, Ogeal Hill, Barbara Hervey, and other adopted sons, daughters, and friends whom she loved and who loved her, just too many to name; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. A special thanks to the Life Care Center of Grandview, Missouri and the people who cared for her. Funeral Service for Altisha Mae Polk will be held Monday, February 26, 11:00 a.m. at East Independence Church of Christ, 2020 Hwy 291 South, Independence, Missouri.
