Thurman loved the Lord, and was baptized at an early age. In 1951, he met Dorothy J. Bates and they married in 1957. They moved to Kansas City in 1957, where they made their home for the next fifty-seven years. To this union was born three children. They attended Churches of Christ in Kansas City, Swope Parkway Church of Christ (formally located at 14th and Michigan and 39th and Michigan) and Blue Ridge Church of Christ. Thurman was an active member of these congregations including Song Leader, Trustee, Ministry Leader, Bus Ministry Leader, Swope Parkway Chorus, Men’s Action Group, Deacon, Finance Committee, Male Singing Group and Youth Director. As part of his commitment, he did sick visitation, devotional studies with delinquent members which ultimately led them back to Christ as well as baptizing many souls. Additionally, he and Dorothy attended many Lectureships, National Association of Celebrated Seniors, and Crusades for Christ campaigns across the country.
Thurman loved his family and helped to shape their spiritual values, leading by example. He demonstrated solid work ethics and provided for his family as an employee of Menorah Medical Center for over thirty years. He loved to bowl, fish and fish fry’s, playing dominoes, photographer/videographer. He was gifted as a do-it-yourself mechanic, electrician, and plumber, which saved his family and others (you know who you are), and attended family reunions. His laughter and sense of humor could brighten any room. His servant’s heart extended beyond his family to include caring for Foster children. Two of them still call him Dad to this day. In 2014, because of declining health, Thurman and Dorothy moved to Dallas, Texas to be closer to his children and grandchildren. They worshipped at North Colony Church of Christ until his health prohibited him from attending.
